From Animal House to Our House

Lots of people have asked us how we feel about Delta Upsilon, the fraternity that wrecked the house before we bought it. Our old Queen Anne was in original condition when the fraternity obtained it in 1989. By the time they were done ten years later, the house had been condemned and the frat boys had abandoned it.

Ron was angry at the frat boys for several years, mainly because he was doing all of that hard work to undo all of that very serious damage. Somemtimes I'd hear him cursing (loudly) at the long-gone frat boys as he labored. I (Jill) wasn't angry so much as frustrated and astonished at how a bunch of boys could be so oblivious to their abuse of a beautiful buildling.

Eventually, Ron calmed down. "They were just kids," he says now. One morning, not long ago, we found a package on our front stoop: it contained two door knobs and some door hardware from our house. The enclosed note said, "I used to live here and took these when I left. Thought you could use them." We suspect that some of the frat boys have grown up and had second thoughts about their time here.

This chapter of Delta Upsilon was barred from Johns Hopkins campus, then dissolved, and, apparently, has not returned to the university.

Our story has generated many comments about fraternities and frat life. We share them with you here, starting with the most recent. Warning: you may find some comments offensive. (If it's too offensive, we won't post it.) You can comment too by using the comment box to your left.

P.S. You should check out the trailer to the frat house Hollywood movie that was filmed in our house when the fraternity was living here.

Do you have any pictures of the basement bar? I built that before the house was destroyed by subsequent years of students.I lived in the house 95-96 - It went downhill after we got in trouble in 97 that's when it got really trashed. I also built the loft on the second floor front room along with the bar that was in front of the fireplace. Rob D.

Note to Rob: Man, you built that bar and that loft really well. It took me forever to dismantle them!

Not all frat's/sororities are "brats". All it takes is a few bad apples to ruin the bunch. I am greek and proud of it! I was the academic advisor to my sorority. They have to keep a certain GPA to even stay in. This GPA is higher than what the university sets. We have rules that we have to follow. What happen to this house should not be held against all greeks!!! I am glad the house now got a pair to love it! I have partied with fellow greeks and non-greeks alike. Let me tell you, I have been in houses owned by non greeks as well that have destoyed a house. It is not just greeks doing this. Universities and landlords should be held accountable, as well as the rentee's. A Proud Greek

johns hopkins sucks! a phd is no permit for stupid. if you dont agree then kiss my ....

Here's a tibit you might be interested to know . . . most of the college students in the Charles Village area of Baltimore, MD are attending Johns Hopkins University. Your future doctors and scientists at work!! Barbara

Frat and Sorority groups should simply not be allowed. Colleges and Universtities should take more responsibility -- this is outrageous behavior that goes unchecked. A disgrace to any college or university. And a disgusting shame when a decent landlord unwittingly becomes involved with this lowlife

Not only is grouping fraternity and sororities together as "the biggest spoiled brats in America" incorrect but it is just plain uneducated. In any group of any age there are individuals that do not have respect for their own or others belongings. Just to correct those who think otherwise; fraternities and sororities do more charitable and philanthropic work than any other groups on college campuses put together. Do some research before you make stupid, uneducated and ridiculous statements about groups of people that you have no correct knowledge of.

I think Frat and Sorority Groups are the biggest spoiled brats in America. They are nothing more than gangs raping girls with date rape drugs and destroying the quiet enjoyment of neighbors as well as destroying homes. I had one burned down because they were "having a romantic evening" with candles. Drunk and on Drugs. They were lucky to have gotten out alive from the fire they started. Then they sued me for not getting their security deposit back. Scum of the earth these frat boys.

Are you all not catching the Animal House references here? Bluto/Eric Stratton is quoting lines from the movie. Wake up!

Why is it frat boys always want to blame it on someone getting lookedover during rush week when criticized for their behaviors? Only wimps and people who dont know how to make friends without paying for them even go to a rush. Aside from that, I read a comment where someone said to "try to live a little bit before casting a stone." I've partied my ass off and "lived" without making an ass of myself like a lot of those guys (and girls, too). I also know that there are frats and sororities who know how to party without destroying eveything they come into contact with. It's time they get some credit and maybe that can discredit these punks that keep tearing up our towns HSS.

bluto if your stupid enough to do this to a beautiful home, then you are defenitly stupid enough to not have gotten anything out of college...no wonder it was " down the drain "

Yo Bluto!! Boo Hoo! Yeah, if you go to the website: it says not just frat boys but theives also destroyed parts of the house: www.houselove.org "many details were missing from the house because it had sat abandoned for nearly a year. Thieves had taken several mantels, as well as the columns in the music room, the chandeliers, door hardware, etc." lay off us frat guys. Frat Guy #7

yes i agree with one commenter re frats and not all like this but story should be told and college associated with it inexcusable they do this ye sit makes it bad for good ones i agree

It's unfortunate that articles like this taint the reputation of all fraternities. They aren't all like this. I know I belong to one, we do monthly community service projects, and maintain our 77-year old chapter house with a lot of spit-'n-polish,and pride.

don't these idiots have parents? Maryland neighbor

I wonder what the childhood homes of these vandal students were like. If I have occasion to hire a graduate of Loyola, I will be certain to ask where he lived while he was in college. If he would trash out where he "lived", he wouldn't think twice about vandalizing my business. William

Now why in the world would you want to paint over fantastic scorpion murals like that? Bethany

What a shame that a few bad apples have to spoil a good time for everyone by breaking the rules. Eric Stratton

Hey, Bluto... Maybe someday your kids will enjoy college as you did. And you can pay for all the damage they do! If that's all you got out of school, fun wreaking someone's property, we can only hope it happens to you someday! Sammy

Christ. Seven years of college down the drain. Bluto

kappa and frat guy. anytimed someone uses the term y'all, you identify yourself as a jail bird. heard it a lot of times, Guess where-jail!

Kappa, are you 2? Are you a complete idiot and not just stupid? Grow up and may you be blessed with children just like you

its a house and some of your comments are stupid..why would a parent visit a frat house? you don't actually live in a frat house idiots. The building should have been kept up better but after class and studying who feels like cleaning you just want to chill out and relax "yall old people" really over reacted. Kappa i am

Yeah, if you go to the website: it says not just frat boys but theives also destroyed parts of the house: www.houselove.org "many details were missing from the house because it had sat abandoned for nearly a year. Thieves had taken several mantels, as well as the columns in the music room, the chandeliers, door hardware, etc." Frat guy #7

No don't lay off the Frat guys' maybe they didn't steal because they wouldn't recognize anything good but they were slobs and if they were my kids i would have killed them. Pat Heilselr

Some of you are so biased, you allow 1 or 2 extreme cases like this to cloud your thinking. How about all of the Fraternities that do good things for the communities. Larry the House Inspector Sat, Mar 15, 08 at 01:00 PM Relax, its a house, its college, people drink, calm down, were not saving the manatees. Some of you are writing about prosecuting these kids, reactive vs. proactive strategies....calm down. chill out. Frat Guy #6

I absolutely agree with Susan 'that the previous occupants should be tracked down and prosecuted!' There is NO excuse for such behavior ... and, by the way, where were any of these young men's parents? Didn't any of them visit the frat house? My son would NEVER have been allowed to have participated in such behavior or living situation ... he'd STILL be grounded if I found he'd participated in the kind of destruction and disrespect inflicted on this house! Parissa

I think that the previous occupants should be tracked down and prosecuted. Why do we tolerate this outrageous behavior? Susan

I live in a college town where greeks used to rule the party scene. Through decades of misuse, abuse, and lawsuits, the greek scene is dwindling because the idiots dont know how to take care of their houses. Two of such beautiful homes are going to be demolished this year because the frat brothers who lived their thought it more important to buy big screen TVs then repair the roof. Now its condemned. Laws should be passed stating that if a greek organization cant maintain their house, then it should be condemned and given to a historical society. I throw all kinds of house parties in the house Im renting with 4 friends, and we have no problem taking care of our mess. Using the excuse "boys will be boys" is lame. Boys will be boys is about boys, CHILDREN, not of-age adults who are supposed to make informed decisions. Cheers to those who rescued this poor home. May they move to Potsdam, New York and discover a treasure trove of such wrecks in need of some TLC. End Rant

god you guys suck... anyone who posts anything about how frats are cool/uncool is obviously gay.

GREAT Comment OTTER! Sorry all of you bleeding hearts got dumped during Rush Week! GET OVER IT! Sammy

Congradulations **** Hole! Sounds like you got over looked in Rush Week. Boys will be Boys. Before you cast a stone, why not try to live, take a gasp. John

bunch of little boys and girls immature daddys girls and mamma boys get a life their college pukes. miguel

Whatever

Yeah you're right, they're terrible they trash their own houses. You should petition to have them all shut down. Also you should make sure they are shut down in order to stop the flow of the millions of dollars they raise for cancer research, abused children, and battered women's shelters. Those Greeks are a bunch of lousy drunks!

I just had an idea. Maybe we should call them BRATS instead of frats arizona

I have lived on or near many college campuses around the country and, yes, I DO blame all fraternities and the system. If the heads of the frats don't condone this, then why is this kind of destruction rampant? I have seldom seen a fraternity house that was actually in good condition. Maybe a few lessons in CLASS would help the Greek system. Maingirl

Otter, please. Where were you when all of this destruction went on? Of course we blame you and your "fraternity". If you were there, what did you do to stop it? Nothing. You were as big a part of it as anyone and are equally to blame. Out of control actions by immature children away from home showing how cool they are, especially to their "female party guests". You guys are a joke. I hope the remodelers of this grand old home are saving all of these comments; they should be compiled into a lecture. Your logic, Otto, is extremely faulty. Sammy

Boo Hoo nancy!! Frat Guy #7

There seem to be some of those who destroyed the house sending in their comments...To them, I can only hope that someday, someone will destroy something they own and will then understand how it feels. Or, perhaps, they are beyond comprehending anything other than their own selfishness. Wonder what they've done productive in their lives??? Probably not much... nancy K

????????,????????????-21??????????-????????????,????????????,???? ...????????????-????????????????-????????????????????????..??????????..??????????..??????????..

I hope that the ones that did the damage are sorry and can see what you have turned this into! Someone out there knows 'someone' who was a part of this destruction and should let them know. Great job you have done! Barbara K.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules or took a few liberties with our female party guests -- we did. But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few sick, perverted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg ... isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do what you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America! Gentlemen! Otter

Those classless fraternity kids. Dick Hayaupotheke

Looks unbelievable, can't believe you two did all this, Great Job! Would love to see side by side before and afters, am going to the other site now to read the whole story! I don't condone what the college kids did to the house but in their defense, the house looked nothing like it does now when they moved in, i'm sure it was pretty much trashed then too! A Frat House- come on people! Dave

Wow what a beautiful job you both did! I just cringed when I read what the frat house did! Their is no excuse for that kind of behavior sounds like over indulged and over priviledged kids to me. They had no appreciation for anything beyond their tunneled life.

Don't judge something you know nothing about kat

The evil Frat boys destroyed the house that they lived in and paid for. They should be punished and frats should be eliminated. So should the millions of dollars that they raise and donate that is dedicated to cancer research, battered children, battered women and other charitable organizations. But I guess you're too busy making your house pretty to worry about that. On another note, nice job I know how hard it is to renovate a frat house, I had to do it to the one I lived in.

Hmmm...I remember Rob's many contributions to this tragedy...

Oh, man. It took me a day to day to dismantle that bar. I'd never seen so many scews. For the complete story--including the movie filmed in the house. Go to our website, houselove.org. Thanks. Ron

They took the bar! The whole **** bar! Bluto

Do you have any pictures of the 20ft bar that I built? And yes it was a tragedy of what happened to the house.

one time i tossed a brick, and it went right threw one of those windows on the first floor. it wasnt my fault though

This house looked pretty bad, but don't hate on Loyola for it. They didn't do it. Those kids think they're hardcore but they can't throw down with the Hop. This masterpiece was trashed by some of the finest young minds of our generation. Tweet Tweet!

Absolutely GORGEOUS remodel! As for the delinqents who trashed it in the fiorst place, your parents would keel over if they knew how their hard earned money was spent for your college "education", and no wonder you all are responding here at 11 am, you probably can't hold down any self respecting job. Nancy from L.I.

People that destroy anyone's, even their own property is considered worse than juvenile delinquents! And these were College Students? The things they did were more discusting than the normal person can even think about. They should have been prosecuted by the law! No wonder the world's going to Hell in a handbag with that sort of young people coming along to lead A great country like America! But through it all you folks made something great out of the mess they made with something truly wonderful as that house is. And you know what? Someday they will look back at what they did and feel very asshamed of such behavior. They know who they are right now. Ya know? Beautiful Job, gorgeous Home! Simply Sheri

Frat Guy should have called himself, "Still a Frat Guy." Reminds me of the Will Farrell character in Wedding Crashers. Meanwhile, nice job on the rehab. It took courage and persistence.

you should feel disgusting living in that house SEMEN EVERYWHERE! I drew the scropion!

I have read that this generation of Americans might have education but NOT CLASS! I also have heard for my ownself how the "newer" Americans are CRUDE! That is also true because no matter how "up-scale" the restaurant you're in--you heard such language that makes you wonder if any English teachers are still living! I can not understand how destroying a beautiful building is "fun"! GREAT JOB---beautiful job to make anyone proud!

$20 if you guys can guess which closet we used as a urinal... Frat Guy #3

Delta Upsilon leadership folks should put some standards in place on the care of their lodgings. This house deserved more than the pigs who lived there. It's a real treasure. The dedication of Ron and Jill is exemplary. Now I wonder if they have married after this "bonding" experience? Donna

What you've done with the house is more than you realize. You've pointed out the difference between past generations..and this one. It's all about respect and I'm afraid the current generation, represented by the frat house, are just the tip of the iceberg as far as where we now are as a society. Thanks for all your hard work; it is appreciated more than you know. Nancy K

Your project was truly one of Love in every way. Thank you for saving a wonderful bit of architectual history. Perhaps $50,000 should be added to every college student's tuition to cover the havoc and destruction they wreak on other peoples property. Of course, a refund would be granted should no damage be incurred. 'Wonder what the return percentage would be? Ruth

I raised two sons; have two grown grandsons; not one of them would so trash a building, not one would get that drunk! Did/do they drink? Sure. Did/do they get bombed? Of course, altho not often...they don't like the hang-overs. However, never! have any of them, nor the daughters, been so horrifically wasteful and disrespectful. And there are those who want to give these mindless egomaniacs the vote? Shame, shame on them and on their parents! Disgusting people. Penny

Young guy's are like this when they live together and can drink around the clock. The movie Animal House was not to far off with the way they portrayed the frat house, why do you all find it hard to believe.Just think how your son's act when your not around to watch them?By the way you did a wonderful job on the house, many years of happiness to you both.

Patrick, what were the years you were in the house? Nancy

This is for Patrick. I certainly hope that you've gown up since then because you were a real idiot!....typical frat boy. Joan

The frat boys who destroyed this house are not the future of our generation--they are the dregs. There are plenty of young people who would be horrified by their behavior, and inspired by the restoration of this home. I wish I could have pitched in. Lee

that was my frat house, and used to pass out in that bathroom. Patrick

What a beutiful job you have done--for restoring this beautiful place- Cannot imagine Frats are so in considerate of property & destruction- & thoes Frat are future of the next generation- May God help us Julie

the things these college level kids do !!Thanks for saving a beaut !!! helen

Yes I agree to paint slogans on the walls and leave garbage to the ceiling is poor bringing up !!! Pat Heisler

You have made a really beautiful home. I wonder why those frat brothers weren't made to pay for the destruction to the house. I wonder where they are now and what careers they have chosen. I sure wouldn't want them on my payroll. Dorothy

Actually, our beloved president was exactly like these boys (the like of which deserve to be put on the front lines in Iraq) when he himself was a college age frat guy. Anti-fratboy

I believe it was a middle aged man who lead the country into war - not college age guys. Anonymous

I've never understood what makes college age guys want to demolish property the way they do. It must be that lethal mix of alcohol and testosterone. No wonder we have wars. Good luck with your wonderful "new" home. And I hope "Bingeroso" finds a new hobby. Marian Mundy

You have made a really beautiful home. I wonder why those frat brothers weren't made to pay for the destruction to the house. I wonder where they are now and what careers they have chosen. I sure wouldn't want them on my payroll Dorothy Foley

I love scouring any and all sources for antiques and unique finds. My teenage boys realize that I love the pieces I've found that they live amongst, though I'm sure they don't really appreciate them. But I HAD to call them to the computer to see the utter destruction of 100 yrs of irreplaceable historical architecture at the hands of men not much older than they are. Even they were shocked at this level of truly horrible actions. Makes a mother proud! Hundreds of thousands of people are SO grateful for those like you, willing to give so much to restore these beautiful homes. Suzanne

Amazing to think, it having been a frat house that college kids nearly destroyed it!!! Thank you for restoring it, you have done a truely awesome job, lots of love and labor in it!!! Gailregreen

Just wanted to say, I am Proud of people who can go in and save a priceless old house like this, and restored it, I also wanted to say that people with kids in college who go out and DESTROYED things like this, BLAME the parents and MAKE and SUE the parents, since they seem to have enough money to cover the kids colege, what should happen is that the parents should be sued and then the kids should be forced to forgo one yr of college to help to paint and build what they have destroyed, they can always pick up that one yr of college later all, after they have been taught what respect is, because they were nevner taught respect any way, I was always taught respect, and y parents were better people then most of these college educated criminals that destroyed things, my brothers and sisters and I went to community colleges and got two yr degrees, and to be honest, WE HAVE BETTER jobs and earn more money then alot of the 4 yr college educated people we know Anne Gruber

The frat boys that lived in that house were such drug addicts I am shocked you didnt find a stash of ecstasy, mushrooms, weed, and other assorted pills in the walls. Nice job. I wasnt sad to see that fraternity go. I graduated in 98'. alumni- 98'

what a fantastic accomplishment. an inspiration to all couples working toward a common goal. we'll check out your website houselove.org. LOIS, Orlando

this has been one of the most interesting and enjoyable sagas of restoration that i have ever read. very inspiring. good luck to you. happcookl

be very proud!!!!! you did something most only dream of and rarely succeed at. You made it a lovely home. We need more caring people in this world like you two. Also congrats on keeping a new relationship alive thru this, my husband and i had a hard time just building a new home w/o killing each other and we have been married 15 years. you are special people and it warms my heart to read your story. Sheila

What a wonderful story! Thank you for saving this gem, may you have many happy years together in this beautiful home. Surviving this project together has probably made you a stronger couple too. Too bad those kid's parents didn't bother to instill in them any sense of pride in their surroundings or respect for the craftsmanship of the past. I'd love to graffiti the lot of THEM! Liza Saulis

This is the greatest, I absolutly love all you 2 did...We are in the early process of restoring the house i was born and raised in...which over the years my family remodled..now we are bringing it back ...I remember the beautiful french doors..the crystal door knobs, and brass plates..they r still here but heavily painted..radiators as well...so I will think of you as we do this project...Just hope my husband and I after 30 years of marriage...can pull this off... Jane

Congratulations!!! My daughter just having graduated from college, lived in one of these college "mistreated" homes. Not only are the kids to blame but also the landlords. You should see the house my daughter and her friends lived in, and these girls could have passed for Felix Ungers daughters! The day they moved in, I was horrified at the conditions that the landlord gave them the house in. Thank you for sharing this story with the public! The house is beautiful and you two are to be commended, although you did not add to the article, did you two ever get married? Best of Luck to you both!! Kim from Long Island

>
"The Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor" comment was in reference to the movie Animal House...I suggest renting it before you are so quick to judge poor Oaf. He was merely quoting John Belushi from the movie. Oaf supporter

Hey, Oaf, You mispelled college and I might have misspelled mispell! Slenda

>
Absolutely beautiful! I shudder when I think of college students living in such squalor and their families not showing any concern. If it was an authorized frathouse then surely the community should have had some rights to deter such vulgar behavior. You have truly restored a beauty! Did you keep a job during this work? It is a testament to the human spirit to keep on going!! Bravo! Mary lou

Did America quit after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? NO! I'm glad you two didn't quit after seeing the condition of the house when you first looked at it. Great work! Too many of the old buildings that reflect a time in America when fine craftsmanship took precedence over speed, ease of construction, and cost are disappearing forever. Keep up the good work. BTW, the spelling and grammar of the collage students and graduates who posted here really are atrocious. No wonder the house looked like it did! Oaf

Another comment: Too bad you couldn't have rounded up all those hooligans and had them do the work for you! Lisa Haber

>
beautiful house. just ashame people now adays cant appreciate anything.

i'm glad someone finally addressed disbelief in the behavior of the so-called educated savages who distroyed that lovely home. more examples of the spoiled mindless behaviors of the nanny generation. what a lovely place you have made from the garbage left by the garbage.

>
You know that's a beautiful Queen Ann House ! The biggest mistake was to have those young kids totally destoy the integrity of this older home. I go after WHO ever was responsible ? Great Job for the current owners. croatcowboy
I wonder if any of the frat house alumni have seen this article, and what their feelings are now about the house. I am sure some regret choices made, if they were involved in the destruction. Dave

It's such a shame that so many of our "intelligent?" young people are so prone to destructive behavior and a total disregard for the property of others. Parents must be held responsible for this attitude in their children. Manners and respect for others is taught in the home. FLO

The porch off the third floor was great for shooting rats. Crabs

You are blessed with a talent that few couples have. A house is not a home until it is loved. You have a true reflection of your love, for each other and the house. It is beautiful and inspirational. Charm

Liza Saulis

Bravo, been through what you've accomplished and am thrilled you stuck to it! Too many of our old "treasures" are being torn down and I truly bless anyone who has prservation in mind. Thank You!! Bev C

Great job!!! Having done the same on a 1905 duplex in Havre de Grace I can appreciate all your hard work, especially taking old paint off trim. Remember to bleed those radiators regularly. Air will prevent circulation. Jon

The Renevation on this home is astounding. The Frat "Brothers" and the college they are connected to should be ashamed of the destruction on such a beutiful piece of property. From animal house to "our house" its more like Pig stye to Palace. Holly M

Congratulations on your restoration, it is absolutely beautiful. I'm 5 years into a 1200 sq.ft. bungalow, so I have a sense of how much labor you've put into this place. In addition, I'm an old fraternity man, and I can tell you that most fraternities national headquarters would never allow the destruction of a house that represents them. Moreover, the college or national should have shut them down. Good luck and enjoy. Mark Reaves

That's really beautiful. It's hard to believe universities not only graduate such ignorant folks as the drug fueled frat boyz, but businesses actually hire them as competent. Some are more proud of destruction than rehab. That staircase alone is worth it all. I rehab less ornate homes, but would love to tackle one of those if I got a good enough deal. I would love to see TOH do under $100,000 homes like much of the poorer suburbs of the midwest have to offer. Kim

This beautiful home and the "before pictures" make me want to go out and purchase college yearbooks and look at the faces of the hoodlums who demolished it. I want to KNOW that I am not getting involved with any hoodlums who would commit such devastation.William

What the "Frat Boys" did to this house for their pleasure is disgusting, and to think they are out there in the business world today. It would be nice to post their names on a Web Site somewhere so that their employers could see the "real" person they have hired. God save our children and their families who dropped the ball in upbringing. Elise Shepherd

Awesome job guys! I am a college student myself, and it is rediculous that these "kids" (because no responsible adult would treat propert this way) detroyed this beautiful home. What about the previous owner/landlord? They should also be held responsible for allowing these students to destroy and continue to live in this house. Luckily they didn't ruin it to the point of no return! Germangal

you are amazing. it is so lovely. you should find out the names of the zombies that destroyed this gem and publicize them to all the world.they are probably important officials now. and should be exposed. h. hassey

Amazing job! Nearly all frat's/sororities are governed by advisors. What "advising" was done to let them do this is beyond me. Allowing them to destory a house, they also should be held responsible! Peg from Indiana

good riddance to those barbarians. it takes time to chip the raw diamond into a fine jewel. you succeeded beautifully. boredwell

I am truly amazed at both the destruction from an ungrateful generation and the devotion of too few to save and devote their live's so that hopefully, future generations will be interested. Taffy Mollassess

Frat Guy, you just compared yourself to theives and criminals. Get over yourself, you have no respect for the history of our country and just because you are a "Frat Guy" doesn't give you permission to destroy. These people are to be commended for hard work, and you could learn from them. I am sure you are yet to be acquainted with the term.

As a member of a social frat (TKE) for 3 years I know how the group/mob mentality brings out and justifies the worst of adolescent behavior. The gunshot holes in the ceiling were not normal wear and tear.

frat 7, yes, those darn thieves forgot to flush the toilets and take the empty beer kegs. The kegs were the most valuable items in the slum, I would bet

Damage done by the frat guys seems to have its own signature...stopwhining,#7...You made a mess and these great people have cleaned it up. Wish them well. I surely do. Beevo

Yeah, lay off us frat guys...if you go to the website: it says not just frat boys but theives also destroyed parts of the house: www.houselove.org "many details were missing from the house because it had sat abandoned for nearly a year. Thieves had taken several mantels, as well as the columns in the music room, the chandeliers, door hardware, etc." lay off us frat guys Frat buy #7

nice remodel. to all the posters, decades of brothers have passed through this house. with that much traffic, things are bound to get messy.shame on those who made ill willed comments towards the fraternity members. it is completely uncalled for. Duck

The numbers of falling down alcoholics in deep cover as Frat Men whose parents are paying for this is breathtaking. They must have been spawned by equally hedonistic parents. Good show Sidonia Schumann

such an shame thoses kids tore it up .desrespect of old houses what history it carrys .to lose what was there .know it hurt .people should save then [victorian era] .seem like lots been tore down for parking space or newer building .onces gone its lose history & all gald you save itim hopeing to buy one in indiana

Janice needs to live in the midst of this mess to know what it's really like. Yes, if parents aren't responsible, universities should be!! Who has the "right" to trash a residential neighborhood? Aren't the property taxes we pay enough to ask for peace quiet and the cleanliness of our neighborhood? These are fundamental laws that are punishable if broken!!! These are not kids-they are adults!!!

Greek or non-Greek, kids are kids and should be taught to respect the homes of others. I have very bright kids, both graduates of Ivy Leagues, one a Greek, but it doesn't take away from the fact that the once they moved into their own, they lived like slobs (not nasty enough to encourage rodents to come and hang out, but nontheless, not the way I allow them to keep my home). Also, the university should not be responslble for off-campus housing. They have enough on their hands trying to clean up the dorms on campus during the summer. I would never consider renting to anyone under 25, and I definitely would not rent to Greeks, especially fraternities, for the same reason that drinking alcohol is illegal until the age of 21, because the average child is not responsible enough to drink, as well as take care of other people's property. Don't take it personally...all kids are not irresponsible, and I'm sure your apartment is **** & span clean...haha. P.S. work on your vocabulary if you want to maintain that high GPA; the proper word is "renter" or "lessee." Janice

We (neighbors surrounding Central Connecticut State University in NEw Britain, CT. are experiencing the same trashing of former residences sold off to entrepreneurs whose only aim in life is to make money. Period. I own a vintage house in mint condition and will not sell it. Many of my neighbors have spent lots of money to restore their homes-but we are surrounded by a number of trashed noisy college rentals!

I am a landlord and the worst tenants are frat and sorority groups. They disgrace the properties and neighborhoods. Landlords can't discriminate against groups like this in CA. The communities have now voted to impose $1,000 fines for parties. Money talks when these jerks have to pay for it, however, sometimes the organizations pick up the tab. Brats, spoiled brats. Don't care what their GPA is. Most are highly intelligent but that does not take away their ignorance and disrespect as well as use of date **** drugs at their parties.

Patience, dedication,vision...clearly none of the "frat boys" were recieving these lessons at college A proud greek

No, really, which frat was this? I don't recognize it. I was in Delta Upsilon up on North Charles, and the house was in similar disrepair - not really by deliberate destruction by any members, but more from lack of maintenance. We certainly didn't have the cash to do anything meaningful anyway, but we also prided ourselves on being the Animal House of the campus. I woud be interested to ifnd out which house this was.
