26 Aug Spring Project: Making Our Sidewalk Tree Wells

Our tree wells were weedy and ugly. When we finally got around to them, Ron was looking for a fast fix. But i’m a stickler for details and I reminded Ron that our motto is, “Do it once, do it right!” So I said the wells had to be bordered by stone. Real stone is expensive, so we bought “distressed” concrete block that looks like stone.

Below: Ron dug a trench around the perimeter of the well, digging deep enough so that he could pack down about one inch of crushed stone as a base. Ron covered the crushed stone base with weed cloth, leaving enough cloth to discourage weeds. You may have to cut some of the blocks (he uses a grinder to score the block, then he breaks it off with a rubber mallet).
